Taxonomy: Muscicapa Parulus Kittlitz, 1830, Valparaíso, Chile.
Genus was long known as Spizitornis. Molecular data indicate that this species and A. fernandezianus form a superspecies. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- aequatorialis Berlepsch & Taczanowski, 1884 - Andes from S Colombia S to W Bolivia and N Argentina (S to Salta and Jujuy).
- parulus (Kittlitz, 1830) - W Chile (from Atacama) and SW Argentina (from W Neuquén) S to Tierra del Fuego.
- patagonicus (Hellmayr, 1920) - W Argentina (S Mendoza S to N Santa Cruz).
