Monotypic.

Distribution: N Japan (Hokkaido) through Kuril Is, Sakhalin and Sea of Okhotsk to N Chukotskiy Peninsula, and W Alaska (Diomede Is, Cape Thompson) S to Aleutians, E through Gulf of Alaska (Kodiak Archipelago) and S to British Columbia (Queen Charlotte Is, Triangle I) and C California (Farallon Is). Winters mostly at sea and along coasts from Kamchatka Peninsula and S Alaska S through breeding range, rarely to S Japan and S California.
