Taxonomy: Anas Fuligula Linnaeus, 1758, Europe.
Considered by some to form superspecies with A. collaris and A. novaeseelandiae. Hybridization, particularly with other Aythya species, frequently recorded. Monotypic.

Distribution: Across N Palearctic from Iceland eastwards to Kamchatka, southwards to C Europe, N Mongolia and N Japan (Hokkaido).
