Taxonomy: Sterna Trudeaui Audubon, 1838, Great Egg Harbor, New Jersey (probably in error).
Monotypic.
Distribution: Coast and interior of South America, breeding from SE Brazil and Uruguay to Patagonia, rarely to Santa Cruz, and in Chile (Aconcagua to Llanquihue).
