Other common names: Louisiana Heron
Taxonomy: Ardea tricolor P. L. S. Müller, 1776, Cayenne.
Sometimes placed in genus Hydranassa. Birds of W Mexico often placed in separate race occidentalis. Two subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- ruficollis Gosse, 1847 - S & E USA to C America, W Indies, Colombia and NW Venezuela.
- tricolor (P. L. S. Müller, 1776) - NE Venezuela and Trinidad to NE Brazil; Ecuador and extreme N Peru.
