Taxonomy: Puffinus auricularis C. H. Townsend, 1890, Clarión Island, Revillagigedo Group.
Sometimes considered race of P. puffinus. Race newelli has been classified as separate species. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- newelli Henshaw, 1900 - Hawaii.
- auricularis C. H. Townsend, 1890 - Revillagigedo Is (off W Mexico).
