Taxonomy: Basileuterus trifasciatus Taczanowski, 1880, Callacate, Cajamarca, Peru.
Forms a superspecies with B. culicivorus, and has been considered conspecific. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- nitidior Chapman, 1924 - SW Ecuador (El Oro and Loja) and adjacent NW Peru (Tumbes).
- trifasciatus Taczanowski, 1880 - NW Peru (Piura S to La Libertad).
