Taxonomy: Charadrius tricollaris Vieillot, 1818, Cape Town.
Sometimes considered conspecific with C. forbesi; probably best considered to form superspecies. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • tricollaris Vieillot, 1818 - Ethiopia to Tanzania and Gabon, and S to South Africa; non-breeding also around L Chad.
  • bifrontatus Cabanis, 1882 - Madagascar.
