Taxonomy: Motacilla subflava J. F. Gmelin, 1789, Senegal (neotype from 35 km south of Linguere).
Forms a superspecies with P. inornata, P. somalica and P. fluviatilis. Sometimes treated as conspecific with first of those, but differs vocally and, to some extent, in plumage coloration; situation complicated, however, by geographical variation; further study required. Races vary clinally. Ten subspecies recognized.
