Taxonomy: Trochilus macrourus J. F. Gmelin, 1788, Jamaica; error = Cayenne.
Formerly placed in monospecific genus Eupetomena; song structure and enlarged shaft of primary in male support present treatment in Campylopterus. Nominate and race simoni intergrade in C Brazil (C Goiás, W & C Minas Gerais). Five subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • macrourus (J. F. Gmelin, 1788) - the Guianas and N, C & SE Brazil (Amapá and Pará; Mato Grosso, Goiás and Minas Gerais to São Paulo) to Paraguay.
  • simoni (Hellmayr, 1929) - NE Brazil (S Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Pernambuco and Bahia to C Goiás and C Minas Gerais).
  • cyanoviridis (Grantsau, 1988) - SE Brazil (Serra do Mar in S São Paulo).
