Taxonomy: Colymbus fulica Boddaert, 1783, Cayenne.
Suggested subdivision of family into two subfamilies places present species alone in Heliornithinae. DNA analysis suggests possible link between present species and Aramidae. Monotypic.
Distribution: SE Mexico S through Central America and throughout most of N South America mainly E of the Andes, as far S as Bolivia and NE Argentina.
