Taxonomy: Indicator archipelagicus Temminck, 1832, Pontianak, Borneo.
Closest relatives are probably I. xanthonotus and I. indicator. Thought to have derived from early Asian invasion of Indicator from Africa, and thus from same ancestral stock as I. xanthonotus; bright yellow in plumage and short outer rectrix exhibited by both Asian species, and this combination otherwise shared only with African I. indicator. Monotypic.

Distribution: Forest of lowland S peninsular Thailand, possibly adjacent Myanmar, and Peninsular Malaysia (except S), Sumatra and Borneo.
