Other common names: Yellow-rumped Flycatcher (aureatus)
Taxonomy: Tyrannula sulphureipygia P. L. Sclater, 1857, Córdoba, Veracruz, Mexico.
Sometimes treated as conspecific with M. barbatus. Race aureatus thought by some to be possibly a separate species. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- sulphureipygius (P. L. Sclater, 1857) - SE Mexico (from S Veracruz and N Oaxaca) S on Caribbean slope to Honduras.
- aureatus Bangs, 1908 - S Honduras S on Caribbean slope, and locally on Pacific slope in Costa Rica and Panama, to Pacific lowlands of W Colombia and W Ecuador.
