Thrushes (Turdidae)
Sulawesi Thrush (Cataponera turdoides) - HBW 10, p. 632
French: Cataponère des Célèbes
German: Schwarzbrauendrossel
Spanish: Zorzal Montano de Célebes
Other common names: Sulawesi Mountain/Celebes Mountain Thrush, Cataponera Thrush
Taxonomy: Cataponera turdoides Hartert, 1896, Bonthain Peaks, Sulawesi.
Systematic position unclear, further study needed. Balance of evidence, e.g. voice, singing behaviour, tail-raising habit, flushing behaviour and distinct juvenile plumage, just favours treatment within present family; alternative treatment in Timaliidae also tenable, however, on basis of black eyebrow, short curved wing, rounded tail, bare orbital skin and foraging behaviour. Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- abditiva Riley, 1918 - NC Sulawesi.
- tenebrosa Stresemann, 1938 - S Sulawesi.
- turdoides Hartert, 1896 - SW Sulawesi.
- heinrichi Stresemann, 1938 - SE Sulawesi.
