Taxonomy:
Gallinago aucklandica G. R. Gray, 1845, Auckland Islands.
Forms superspecies with C. pusilla, with which sometimes considered conspecific, especially in past. Race barrierensis of Little Barrier I known from single specimen taken in 1870; presumably extinct. Four extant subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- iredalei Rothschild, 1921 - Little Moggy I, Big South Cape I and other small islands off Stewart I.
- huegeli (Tristram, 1893) - Snares Is (North-east, Broughton and Alert Stack).
- aucklandica (G. R. Gray, 1845) - Auckland Is (Disappointment, Ewing, Adams, Figure of Eight, Rose, Enderby, Ocean and Dundas).
- meinertzhagenae Rothschild, 1927 - Antipodes Is (Antipodes, Bollans, Archway and Inner Windward).
