Taxonomy: Charadrius Oedicnemus Linnaeus, 1758, England.
Non-parallel clines in size and coloration confuse subspecific definition (see page 350) and several other races proposed; possible races jordansi of Balearic Is and astutus of Afghanistan and Persian Gulf normally included within nominate race and race saharae respectively. Six subspecies recognized.

- saharae (Reichenow, 1894) - N Africa, Mediterranean islands, Greece and Turkey to Middle East, E to Iraq and Iran.

- harterti Vaurie, 1963 - R Volga area E through Transcaspia and Turkestan to Zaysan basin, and S through C Iran to Pakistan and extreme NW India.
- indicus (Salvadori, 1865) - India and Sri Lanka E to Indochina.
