Taxonomy: Charadrius spinosus Linnaeus, 1758, Egypt.
Often placed in genus Hoplopterus. Forms superspecies with V. duvaucelii, with which sometimes considered conspecific. Monotypic.
Distribution: E Mediterranean and Middle East up R Nile to C & S Sudan, and S of Sahara from Senegal through Nigeria to Ethiopia, and S to Uganda and Kenya.
