Taxonomy: Anas gambensis Linnaeus, 1766, Gambia.
Some authors have proposed isolation of present species in a tribe (Plectropterini), or even in a subfamily (Plectropterinae), of its own. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- gambensis (Linnaeus, 1766) - Gambia to Ethiopia, S to Angola and Zambezi R.
- niger Sclater, 1877 - S Africa, from Namibia and Zimbabwe to Cape Province.
