Other common names: Spotted Cormorant, Crested/Ocean Shag; Blue Shag (oliveri)
Taxonomy: Pelicanus [sic] punctatus Sparrman, 1786, Queen Charlotte Sound, South Island, New Zealand.
Often includes P. featherstoni as race. Sometimes placed in genus Stictocarbo. May be better regarded as monotypic, due to uncertainty caused by considerable variations in pre nuptial and nuptial plumage. Two subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- punctatus (Sparrman, 1786) - New Zealand.
- oliveri Mathews, 1930 - Stewart I; also Westland (South I).
