Other common names: Diamond-bird; Yellow-rumped Pardalote (xanthopyge)

Taxonomy: Pipra punctata Shaw, 1792, “New Holland” = Port Jackson region, New South Wales, Australia.
Most closely related to P. quadragintus. Race xanthopyge sometimes treated as a separate species, but intergrades with nominate in South Australia (Mt Lofty Ranges); millitaris less clearly distinct. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • millitaris Mathews, 1912 - NE Australia (coastal and subcoastal NE Queensland).
  • punctatus (Shaw, 1792) - coastal and subcoastal SW, S, E & SE Australia (in E, as far N as Clarke Range), including Bass Strait islands (King I, Flinders I) and Tasmania.
  • xanthopyge McCoy, 1866 - semi-arid inland SW & SE Australia.
