Taxonomy: Indicator maculatus G. R. Gray, 1847, no locality = Gambia.
Forms a superspecies with I. variegatus, marginally overlapping in SW Sudan and W Uganda. Proposed race feae synonymous with nominate maculatus; theresae with stictithorax. E race often listen as “stictothorax” but original spelling, stictithorax, must stand. Two subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- maculatus G. R. Gray, 1847 - Gambia to Nigeria.
- stictithorax Reichenow, 1877 - S Cameroon E to SW Sudan, S to N Angola (Cabinda), S & E Zaire and SW Uganda.
