Taxonomy: Rallus Porzana Linnaeus, 1766, France.
Monotypic.
Distribution: British Is and Spain E across S Scandinavia, N Mediterranean and Balkans to W & C Russia, Caucasus and Iran, continuing to Kazakhstan, SW Siberia (Suva) and NW China (W Xinjiang). Winters from Mediterranean and Middle East S to W Africa, and from Ethiopia S to South Africa and W to Angola and Namibia; Pakistan, India and W Myanmar; irregularly on SW Caspian Sea.
