Taxonomy: Rallus melanops Vieillot, 1819, Paraguay.
Sometimes placed in Porphyriops. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- bogotensis (Chapman, 1914) - E Andes of Colombia.
- melanops (Vieillot, 1819) - E Bolivia and Paraguay, E & S Brazil to extreme NE Argentina and Uruguay.
- crassirostris (J. E. Gray, 1829) - Chile and Argentina, except extreme S.
