Taxonomy: Dendrocolaptes affinis Lafresnaye, 1839, Mexico.
Forms a superspecies with L. lacrymiger, and treated as conspecific by most authors; separated on basis of plumage and vocal differences, although detailed analysis of vocal characters yet to be undertaken. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- lignicida (Bangs & Penard, 1919) - NE Mexico (SW Tamaulipas, E San Luis Potosí).
- affinis (Lafresnaye, 1839) - both Atlantic and Pacific slopes of Middle America, from E & S Mexico (extreme SE San Luis Potosí, W Guerrero) S to N Nicaragua.
- neglectus (Ridgway, 1909) - mountains of Costa Rica and W Panama (Chiriquí Highlands).
