Spanish: Cabezón Pechiblanco
Taxonomy: Capito maculicoronatus Lawrence, 1861, Atlantic side of Isthmus of Panama.
Has been thought to form a superspecies with C. squamatus, but, although sharing some plumage patterns, probably not very closely related; the two are separated geographically by divergent C. quinticolor. Forms described as race pirrensis from S Panama and NW Colombia and melas from Caribbean E Panama now considered indistinguishable from rubrilateralis. Two subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- maculicoronatus Lawrence, 1861 - W Panama (Veraguas) E to Canal Zone.
- rubrilateralis Chapman, 1912 - E Panama to NW Colombia (E to Antioquia and S to Valle).
