Other common names: Grey Duck, Spotbill, Spot-billed Grey Duck; Chinese Spotbill (zonorhyncha); Burmese Spotbill (haringtoni); Indian Spotbill (poecilorhyncha)
Taxonomy: Anas poecilorhyncha J. R. Forster, 1781, Ceylon.
Forms superspecies with A. superciliosa and A. luzonica. The former is often considered a subspecies of present species. Several cases of hybridization reported in captivity with the two aforementioned species, and also with A. platyrhynchos, producing fertile progeny. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- zonorhyncha Swinhoe, 1866 - SE USSR, Sakhalin and Japan to S China.
- haringtoni (Oates, 1907) - E Assam and Burma eastwards to S China and Laos.
- poecilorhyncha J. R. Forster, 1781 - throughout Indian Subcontinent and E to W Assam.
