Puffbirds (Bucconidae)

Spot-bellied Puffbird (Nystalus maculatus) - HBW 7, p. 128

French: Tamatia tamajac German: Fleckmantel-Faulvogel Spanish: Buco Durmilí
Other common names: Spot-backed Puffbird; Streak-bellied Puffbird (striatipectus)

Taxonomy: Alcedo maculata J. F. Gmelin, 1788, Brazil = Ceará.
Race striatipectus may be a separate species, on basis of morphology, but vocalizations apparently similar; further study required in zone of probable contact, in Pantanal. Proposed race parvirostris (C Brazil) not reliably separable from nominate; pallidigula (SW Brazil) synonymous with striatipectus, showing only minor, apparently clinal, differences. Two subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • maculatus (J. F. Gmelin, 1788) - NE & C Brazil (to SW Mato Grosso).
  • striatipectus (P. L. Sclater, 1854) - SC & SE Bolivia (Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, Santa Cruz) and SC Brazil (W Mato Grosso do Sul) S to W & C Paraguay and NW Argentina (S to Córdoba).
