Taxonomy: Picumnus innominatus Burton, 1836, Sikkim.
Despite enormous geographical separation, present species appears to be closely related to congeners (see page 300). Proposed races simlaensis (NW Himalayas) and avunculorum (SW India) now considered synonymous with, respectively, nominate and race malayorum. Three subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- innominatus Burton, 1836 - NE Afghanistan, N Pakistan and Kashmir E through N India and Nepal to SE Tibet and Assam.
- malayorum Hartert, 1912 - peninsular and NE India (except Assam) E to SW China (S Yunnan), S to Indochina, Sumatra and N Borneo.
- chinensis (Hargitt, 1881) - C, E & S China (S from Sichuan and S Jiangsu).
