Southern Pochard (Netta erythrophthalma) - HBW 1, p. 615

French: Nette brune German: Rotaugenente Spanish: Pato Morado
Other common names: Red-eyed Pochard; African Pochard, South African Pochard (brunnea); South American Pochard (erythrophthalma)

Taxonomy: Anas erythrophthalma Wied, 1832, Lagoa do Braço, Villa de Belmonte, eastern Brazil.
Sometimes placed in monospecific genus Phaeoaythia; apparently not closely linked to other members of genus Netta. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • brunnea (Eyton, 1838) - Ethiopia southwards to Cape Province.
  • erythrophthalma (Wied, 1832) - Venezuela; E Brazil to NE Argentina.
