Other common names: Red-eyed Pochard; African Pochard, South African Pochard (brunnea); South American Pochard (erythrophthalma)
Taxonomy: Anas erythrophthalma Wied, 1832, Lagoa do Braço, Villa de Belmonte, eastern Brazil.
Sometimes placed in monospecific genus Phaeoaythia; apparently not closely linked to other members of genus Netta. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- brunnea (Eyton, 1838) - Ethiopia southwards to Cape Province.
- erythrophthalma (Wied, 1832) - Venezuela; E Brazil to NE Argentina.
