Other common names: Antarctic Giant Petrel, Giant Fulmar, Stinker
Taxonomy: Procellaria gigantea Gmelin, 1789, Staten Island, off Tierra del Fuego.
Long considered conspecific with sibling M. halli, with which known to have hybridized on occasions; populations of Gough I and Falkland Is in S Atlantic may merit subspecific status. Monotypic.
Distribution: Circumpolar in Southern Ocean, breeding in Antarctica and from S Chile and SC Argentina E through subantarctic islands to Heard I and Macquarie I.
