Taxonomy: Muscicapa malachura Shaw, 1798, Port Jackson = Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Forms a superspecies with S. mallee and S. ruficeps; has been treated as conspecific with former. Correct form of subspecies name polionotum unclear, as both “polionotum” and “polionota” quoted in original description; “polionotum” provisionally adopted herein, pending published clarification by original describers. Eight subspecies recognized.
