Taxonomy: Sterna hirundinacea Lesson, 1831, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
Monotypic.
Distribution: Coasts of S Peru and Espírito Santo (CE Brazil) S to Tierra del Fuego, including Falkland Is. In austral winter extends N to Ecuador and Bahia (CE Brazil).
