Taxonomy: Gallinago solitaria Hodgson, 1831, Nepal.
Genus formerly named Capella, as this name erroneously considered to pre-date Gallinago (see page 446). Validity of races uncertain. Two subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • solitaria Hodgson, 1831 - high mountains of C Asia, from SC Siberia through Altai, Tien Shan and Pamirs to Himalayas and probably S Tibet; winters S to E Pakistan and N India, and E to Myanmar.
  • japonica (Bonaparte, 1856) - mountains of Sakhalin and NE China (Heilongjiang), and probably also from Stanovoy Mts through Dzhugdzhur and Kolymskiy Mts to Kamchatka, and S to Sikhote Alin; winters from Amurland and Sakhalin to Kamchatka, and in Korea, Japan and E China.
