Taxonomy: Ardea Thula Molina, 1782, Chile.
Forms superspecies with E. garzetta. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- brewsteri Thayer & Bangs, 1909 - W USA, Baja California.
- thula (Molina, 1782) - North, Central and South America: from NE USA through Caribbean to NE Argentina; and from NW Mexico to S Chile.
