Taxonomy: Procellaria nivea G. Forster, 1777, lat. 52° S., long. 20° E.
Races may constitute two separate species, as sympatry without interbreeding reported from E Antarctica (see page 217); alternative version claims most colonies are mixed, with extensive zone of hybridization; subspecific distribution confused and some authors prefer to recognize single monotypic species. Two subspecies normally recognized.

  • nivea (G. Forster, 1777) - Antarctica, South Georgia, Scotia Arc.
  • confusa Mathews, 1912 - Antarctica and adjacent islands; South Sandwich Is.
