Taxonomy: Eudyptes robustus Oliver, 1953, Snares Islands.
Forms superspecies with E. pachyrhynchus and E. sclateri; has been considered race of former. Scientific name E. atratus formerly used, but was technically applicable to E. sclateri; name officially suppressed, to avoid confusion. Monotypic.

Distribution: Snares Is, to S of South I (New Zealand).
