Taxonomy: Caprimulgus clarus Reichenow, 1892, Bukoba Tanzania.
Formerly considered conspecific with C. fossii, and these two form superspecies with C. climacurus; all three have frequently been separated in genus Scotornis. N populations formerly awarded separate race, apatelius. Monotypic.
Distribution: Djibouti, Ethiopia and SE Sudan S to Tanzania.
