Taxonomy: Larus Geneï Brème, 1839, Sardinia.
Nearest relative uncertain: although white-headed, has display repertoire more like that of the hooded gulls, and possibly closest to L. bulleri. Formerly listed as L. gelastes. Monotypic.
Distribution: Widely scattered, isolated localities from Senegal, Mauritania, S & E Iberia through Mediterranean, Black Sea, Asia Minor and Middle East to E Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and NW India. Winters S to Horn of Africa.
