Taxonomy: Gallinula eurizonoïdes Lafresnaye, 1845, no locality (probably Philippines).
Seven subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- amauroptera (Jerdon, 1864) - Pakistan and India E to E Assam; winters in Sri Lanka and possibly Sumatra.
- telmatophila Hume, 1878 - Myanmar and Thailand E to C Vietnam and SE China (Yunnan and Guangxi); winters in S Thailand and Sumatra, reaching W Java.
- sepiaria (Stejneger, 1887) - Ryukyu Is.

- alvarezi Kennedy & Ross, 1987 - Batan Is (N Philippines).
- minahasa Wallace, 1863 - Sulawesi and Sula Is.
