Taxonomy: Gallinula eurizonoïdes Lafresnaye, 1845, no locality (probably Philippines).
Seven subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • amauroptera (Jerdon, 1864) - Pakistan and India E to E Assam; winters in Sri Lanka and possibly Sumatra.
  • telmatophila Hume, 1878 - Myanmar and Thailand E to C Vietnam and SE China (Yunnan and Guangxi); winters in S Thailand and Sumatra, reaching W Java.
  • sepiaria (Stejneger, 1887) - Ryukyu Is.
