Taxonomy: Melanophoyx vinaceigula Sharpe, 1895, Potchefstroom, Transvaal.
Until recently considered merely colour phase of E. ardesiaca. Monotypic.

Distribution: Okavango Delta, N Botswana, and Caprivi Strip, NE Namibia, through NW Zimbabwe to Bangweulu Swamp, NE Zambia. Possibly also S Zaire and E Angola; formerly occurred in South Africa.
