Taxonomy: Larus schistisagus Stejneger, 1884, Kamchatka.
Considered closely related to L. genei by some authors, to L. argentatus (with which it occasionally hybridizes) by others, but appears to be a distinctive N Pacific species. Monotypic.
Distribution: NE Siberia, from Cape Navarin and Kamchatka S to Hokkaido, NE Honshu and Vladivostok. Winters S to Taiwan.
