Taxonomy: Hypocnemis schistacea P. L. Sclater, 1858, Río Yavarí, Loreto, Peru.
Closest to P. leucostigma and P. caurensis, and sometimes placed with them in separate genus Schistocichla. Monotypic.
Distribution: S Colombia (Putumayo, S Caquetá, Amazonas), NE Ecuador (Sucumbios), E Peru (E Loreto, Ucayali) and WC Amazonian Brazil (WC Amazonas, extreme W Acre).
