Taxonomy: Anas versicolor Vieillot, 1816, Paraguay.
Sometimes placed, together with A. hottentota, in genus Punanetta. Race puna often considered a full species. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- puna Tschudi, 1844 - Andean C Peru to extreme NW Argentina.
- versicolor Vieillot, 1816 - S Bolivia to S Brazil, and S to C Argentina.
- fretensis King, 1831 - C Chile and C Argentina S to Tierra del Fuego; Falkland Is.
