Genus traditionally subsumed in Garrulax. Until recently, this species and T. chrysopterum, T. peninsulae and sometimes T. ngoclinhense were regarded as conspecific with T. erythrocephalum. Report of hybrid between race connectens and T. chrysopterum ailaoshanense, however, calls into question the recent taxonomic split of T. erythrocephalum; birds recorded in NE Myanmar provisionally placed in nominate race of present species, but could belong to T. chrysopterum woodi; further research required. Race ramsayi often merged with nominate, but seems sufficiently distinctive to warrant recognition. Racial identity of individuals of this species in extreme S part of W Thailand uncertain; tentatively included in ramsayi. Five subspecies recognized.
