Spanish: Grulla Siberiana
Other common names: Great/Siberian/Asiatic White Crane
Taxonomy: Grus Leucogeranus Pallas, 1773, central Siberia along Ischim, Irtysh and Ob’ Rivers.
Formerly considered congeneric with Bugeranus carunculatus, based on morphological and behavioural similarities. Alternatively proposed to merit separate monospecific genus, Sarcogeranus. Three wintering subpopulations, but no evidence as yet of geographical variation. Monotypic.
Distribution: Arctic W & EC Siberia; possibly also extreme NW Russia. Three wintering areas: middle R Yangtze in China; Keoladeo (Bharatpur) and other wetlands in India; and S Caspian Sea in Iran.
