Albatrosses (Diomedeidae)

Shy Albatross (Diomedea cauta) - HBW 1, p. 213

Other common names: White-capped Albatross (cauta); Salvin's/Bounty/Grey-backed Albatross (salvini); Chatham Albatross (eremita); Shy Mollymawk

Taxonomy: Diomedea cauta Gould, 1841, Bass Strait.
Sometimes split into three separate species on grounds of differences in coloration, ecology and non breeding ranges. Population of Auckland Is have been assigned separate subspecies, steadi, but doubtfully valid. Three subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • cauta Gould, 1841 - Tasmania and Auckland Is.
  • salvini (Rothschild, 1893) - Crozet, Snares and Bounty Is.
  • eremita (Murphy, 1930) - Chatham Is.
