Taxonomy: Drymoeca brachyptera Sharpe, 1870, River Volta, Ghana.
May be closely allied to the superspecies formed by C. rufus and C. troglodytes, but overlaps in geographical range with both these species. Proposed race tenebricosus (S Mozambique) synonymized with isabellinus. Nine subspecies recognized.
