Taxonomy: Charadrius novæ-Seelandiæ Gmelin, 1789, Queen Charlotte Sound, South Island, New Zealand.
Often placed in genus Thinornis, in recent years increasingly with C. rubricollis, but limits and validity of genus Thinornis remain debatable, so both species probably best retained in Charadrius for present (see page 385). Monotypic.
Distribution: Rangatira I (South-east I) of Chatham Is.
