Taxonomy: Francolinus shelleyi Ogilvie Grant, 1890, Hartley Hills, Umfuli River, Zimbabwe.
Forms superspecies with F. psilolaemus and F. levaillantoides. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Scleroptila with F. streptophorus, F. finschi, F. levaillantii, F. africanus, F. psilolaemus and F. levaillantoides. Several other races have been described, but validity doubtful: uluensis, canidorsalis and sequestris all normally included within nominate shelleyi.
