Taxonomy: Myiothera nematura M. H. K. Lichtenstein, 1823, São Paulo, Brazil.
Genus thought by some authors to be possibly closer to Margarornis and other more arboreal furnariids on basis of similarities in colour pattern, and that traditional placement near Sclerurus reflects morphological convergence resulting from terrestrial habits. Analyses of DNA-sequence data, however, indicate that it is more closely related to Upucerthia and Furnarius. Sight records from W Guyana presumed to pertain to race castanonotus.
